GotPix Version 3 Beta Launch Announcement

Welcome back GotPix fans! It's been a long time coming but we're finally back online after being dormant, err (nearly dead) for the past several years. In fact, the web site you're on now has been in the works for nearly 5 years! That's right, a lot of time and thought has gone into this new version of GotPix, specifically in the thought of what kind of social community we'd really like to be? I will tell you that it hasn't been easy but I'm glad you're back and reading this. Below I will shortly cover our thoughts on the social web as an industry, our direction and of course, new and upcoming features. So read on brave solders!

The Changing Social Web Dynamic

Let's face it, a lot has changed over the past 5 years! MySpace.com completely tanked and was reborn in the form of a social music mp3 listening archive, Facebook has grown to sheer staggering dominance in having well over a billion users, niche social sites related to a specific hobby have arisen while smaller more broad social sites like ours have fallen into obscurity.

A Look into the Future & Social Advancement

If I were to look into the crystal ball and attempt to predict where we might be in another 5 years, I might see more of the same but in a more advanced sense. Facebook will probably offer even newer and trickier ways to connect to every facet of your life which one could view as a positive or negative depending on how much you'd really like to connect? So that leads to the question of, what is right?

The GotPix Social Philosophy

If you haven't been a member here, one thing you'll notice is that GotPix.com has been and will continue to be a very open social network community, meaning that we don't believe in hiding all details of a user's profile to the public but at the same time we're not sharing them either. We leave it completely up to the user on what they would and wouldn't like to share. If you're cool with your details being public, that's the way it is from the moment you sign up but if you choose not to, you're profile will be locked down to only you, your friends and GP Staff. In other words, we're not evil Data Miners!

What Separates GotPix

Some of what separates us from other social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and such are very basic at the core in that we're a bit more underground, non-corporate suit and tie, a bit more wild and willy, one could perhaps even label us as the Anti-Facebook. We're honestly not the social network that you'll have your grand parents posting on your wall getting upset with you about your latest hilariously semi-offensive photo! In other words, you probably won't see them here as that is not our target audience. Although don't take that as if we don't like anyone who is over the age of 50 or 60, it's more-so that we encourage people to sign up who have a similar sense of humor and personality as the site and those who created it. ;)

New & Upcoming Features

Now to the good stuff! First, we will say that for the most part, a lot of features will be the tried and true one's like having an inbox, photo album, friends list, etc... All within the Beta but the largest new feature is the revamped and improved GotPix Ranking & Reputation system! We've put a lot of thought into this one, basically it's going to work like this;

— Any user can give another user reputation points, from +5 to -5
— Users who have a positive reputation will gain respect and status
— Users who gain negative reputation will be labeled a douchnozzle & lose ability to do certain things
— Future updates will allow users to give points based off of their posts
— Future updates will allow a user to accumulate points based on how often they're on the site
— Users with high reputation will have more impact on certain site features and user generated content

As mentioned, much of this is in the very early stages within the Beta and we'll gradually expand on it over the upcoming months. Besides this new system, we're looking to marry new ways to interact with some old and almost forgotten features like an active forum and localized chat!

In Conclusion

Well that's that! We're proud to announce that the new GP Version 3 Beta is finally up and kicking! We're excited about the future and hope we can grow with great user feedback... So be sure to jump in and see what you think. There is a high likelihood that you might run across a few bugs in the site due to us being in the aforementioned BETA so if you see anything, just drop me a note in my inbox and we'll address it. Aside from that, be sure to leave your comments and thoughts below.
